As more and more towing service companies compete for business opportunities each company will try to out perform the competitor in the quality of service they provide. Many towing companies will only hire certified drivers to operate their wreckers. If you are an experienced wrecker operator or a new comer to the industry and do not have certification then you apply for certification as soon as possible.

Towing companies who employ certified wrecker operators have the opportunity to get more business as big and small clients alike are looking for towing companies they can trust so they check if a towing company is certified or employs certified operators.

Certification for a wrecker truck (tow truck) operator is provided by the Towing & Recovery Association of America Inc., (TCAA). The TCAA is the only certification giving body in America that certifies wrecker operators. They established the National Driver Certification Program (NDCP).

In order to claim certification as a wrecker operator, applicants must pass a series of exams in the fields of customer service, safety, incident management, truck, and equipment.

There are three levels of certifications. The first level of certification is the application process. Tests will be given at this level. An applicant may choose between a pencil and paper test or a computer test. The pencil and paper test will cost a member applicant $80 and a non-member applicant $100. The test will be administered at local community colleges, library, or a TOW show. Results of test will be provided within 2 to 4 weeks.
